Innovative Research Team of Functional Biomaterials of KUST

General Information

Innovative research team of functional biomaterials is awarded as one of the key research teams of discipline construction in KUST. The whole team is engaged in the development of new functional biomaterials which can be specifically divided as: I) bone repairing materials and their scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, II) porous organic-fiber materials and reinforced composites as cartilage tissue engineering scaffolds, III) organic-inorganic hybrids based on nano-hydroxyapatite for the remineralization of dental enamel; IV) organic porous membranes and derivatives as skin regeneration materials; V) modified PMMA bone cements for long-term stabilization of implantation. Principal activities in the research team cover the structure and morphology design, preparation and characterization, physical properties testing and biological performance evaluation. Except foundational scientific researches, the team also constantly carries out the medium scale pilot production for the future commercialization of potential materials.

Up to now, the innovative research team of functional biomaterials has assembled 6 core members, undertook more than 20 national-level and provincial-level research projects, the research funding sums up to 2 million Chinese RMB. Under the funding’s support, the research team has cultivated 1 doctor, 25 masters and more than 200 undergraduates. Over 100 scientific research papers have been published and 20 of the 60 applied patents have been authorized. The team owns 2 preparation rooms and 1 ultra-clean cell-culturing lab, existing experimental facilities and equipment is enough to satisfy the preparation of material and in vitro assay of the bioactivity, cytotoxicity and cell adhesion. Besides that, the research team has also established a deeper cooperation with several medical institutions who can provide standardized animal experiment and professional evaluation for the physiological performance in vivo of biomaterials. Recently, the achievements of medium scale pilot production attracts the investment from the enterprise, the research team has signed the R & D contract with Yunnan Baiyao Group Co., Ltd to exploit new dental materials applied for the prevention and cure of dental caries.

Experimental facilities

The research team has already built two workshops for sample preparation and one ultra-clean cell culturing lab for the assay of cytotoxicity and cell adhesion.
